This scene slays me every. time.
That hope he’s so proud of and famous for carrying - his centre, what makes him him - it’s just gone. You can see as it runs from him. It’s still there when he runs out to talk to the kids, show them just how real he is. You can see how he’s nervous, but he’s got that hope niggling at him, telling him they’ll see him, they have to. They’ve got to be able to see him.
He exists.
Believe me, please. I’m right here, right here.
But when that kid goes through him - fuck. It just, it punches me in the gut. It punches Aster in the gut. It’s as though whilst that kid walked through him, he took that last bit of hope with him.
You can just see how he tries to reason with himself in that second to last gif. You can see how he tries to reason it out with himself, but it’s obvious what’s happened and not even Aster’s centre, with how rock steady he is and confident, can take that crack.
He breaks. The once strong, powerful, tall and steady Pooka warrior (our first encounter with him in the movie has him standing straight, shoulders back, a determined, tough look on him face - like he could take on a bloody army without blinking) crumples in on himeself as the greif tears at him.
That last gif. He might as well be a puddle of debri with how much of him’s left. That egg might as well be his heart, with the way he’s clutching at it, attempting to hold it in place and together and comfort it and hold it.
I really both hate and adore this scene because of that: Aster, whilst being glorious, tough bastard, is as soft and fragile as that fluffy tail of his would have us think.
